60 international artworks presented in a spectacular 10,000 square metres industrial architecture – from the pioneers to the contemporary avant-garde

DIMENSIONS has several focus of interest, one is to show the most recent trends of the electronic arts, another is to give a perspective about their roots and evolutions.

After numerous decades of neo-x or post-y where comments on comments were the sole engines of thinking, it is interesting to see that, as electronic arts have reached a certain maturity together with the evolution of technology, we are in front of the edification of a fresh classicism, not a neo classicism but a real and contemporary second apparition with its own rules derived from the essence and particularities of electronic arts.

This is why special creations, recent artworks and NFT will be displayed alongside already classical artworks beginning by the first intuition of 3D scanning and printing concepts by French photographer and sculptor François Willème in 1859.

Another focus is the willingness to open up the field of artistic expressions. Just to give an example, the immersion chapter will not be limited to virtual reality, which is making a new comeback after many attempts, and will also present experiences in more physical "immersive" environments, whatever they still use projection or use direct stimulation of the viewers' brain.

The architecture of Pittlerwerke composed of different types of buildings following the history of industrialisation allows to combine monumental installations and more intimate experiences.

It is also an auspicious coincidence that this exhibition takes place in the hometown of Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz. Although he is not the inventor of the binary system, already present in China in the first millenium BC and studied by him, he developed several elements of binary logic as his "calculus ratiocinator" which anticipated several aspects of computing. Leibniz was also sensitive to the beauty and aesthetic of the binary/digital world anticipating the core of this exhibition too.
