Created for the exhibition Of the human condition: hope and despair at the end of the century in 1994, this video installation comprises visuals also projected on stage in the performance S/N that same year. In this controversial work, Dumb Type applied the "signal/noise" ratio from communications and electrical engineering to social dissonance surrounding contemporary issues of gender, HIV/AIDS, sexualities, race, nationality, minority- and sex-discrimination, looking beyond art toward a broad range of activist involvements with community and identity politics.
